WMV (Windows Media Video) is a video codec and container format developed by Microsoft.
What is actually inside a WMV file?

An ASF stream — Microsoft's Advanced Systems Format, designed around network streaming and digital rights management rather than around editing. The payload is normally Microsoft's own video and audio codecs, which is the root of the compatibility problem: the container is readable almost anywhere, and what it contains is decodable almost nowhere outside Windows. WMV carries Microsoft’s own VC-1 or WMV3 video with WMA audio — codecs almost nothing outside Windows decodes natively.
Why did my screen recorder save a WMV?

Because it is the format the recorder's platform encodes natively, so capture costs almost no processing while the machine is busy doing something else. It is a sensible choice while recording and an awkward one afterwards — the file usually needs converting before it can be shared, edited or embedded anywhere outside the system that made it. Why will my browser not play a WMV file?

Browsers ship decoders for a deliberately short list of formats, and WMV is not on it — the licensing, the codec variety it permits, or simply its age keeps it out. The file is not broken and a desktop player will open it, but nothing you do to the page will make a browser render it. Converting to a web-native container is the only reliable route to inline playback. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
Why does my WMV footage show comb lines on anything that moves?

Because it is interlaced. Content in this format very often comes from the broadcast and DVD era, where each frame is stored as two half-height fields captured a fiftieth of a second apart. A progressive screen displays both at once, so movement between the two exposures appears as horizontal combing. Deinterlacing on conversion weaves the fields into whole frames and the artefact disappears for good.
Why does WMV playback stutter or run hot on older machines?

Because it is being decoded in software. Hardware video decoders only cover a fixed list of formats, and WMV is outside it on most devices, so every frame is reconstructed by the CPU instead. On a current desktop that is merely wasteful; on a phone, an older laptop or a smart TV it shows up as dropped frames, fan noise and battery drain. Converting to a hardware-supported format removes the problem entirely.
Should I still be saving new files as WMV?

Only if something downstream demands it. The format still opens, and there is no urgency about converting an archive that is not causing trouble, but it is no longer where the tooling or the efficiency is going. For anything new, a current format costs nothing extra and avoids the next round of this question a few years from now.
Where do subtitles go for a WMV file?

Beside it, or into the picture. WMV has no subtitle stream of its own, so the two options are a sidecar .srt file the player loads alongside the video, or burning the text into the frames during a re-encode. The sidecar keeps the subtitles editable and switchable but travels as a second file that is easy to lose; burning in survives any transfer but cannot be turned off afterwards.
Why does only one audio track survive in my WMV?

Because that is all the format dependably carries. Extra audio streams can be written into a WMV, but playback support past the first one is inconsistent enough that most tools simply keep one and discard the others. If the source had a commentary or a second language, extract those to separate audio files rather than trusting them to a container that hides them.
Why does WMV only really work properly on Windows?

Because the container is the easy half. WMV was specified around Microsoft's own codecs, and almost nothing outside Windows ships a decoder for those — so the file opens, reports its duration, and then produces no picture or no sound at all. Installing a codec pack is the old answer and a fragile one; converting the payload into something every platform already decodes is the durable one.
Does using WMV require a patent licence?

Not for you. The codecs involved are covered by patent pools, and the licensing is settled by the people who ship decoders — the phone, the browser, the operating system — long before a file reaches you. It is why the format is everywhere in hardware and why royalty-free alternatives exist at all, and it changes nothing about converting a file you already have.
Can I just rename the extension instead of converting WMV?

Almost never, and it is worth understanding why: the extension is a label, while the bytes inside are structured for one specific format. Renaming produces a file whose name promises something its contents do not deliver, and whatever opens it either refuses the file or misreads it. The one narrow exception is two formats that are genuinely the same container under different names — and even then a proper rewrap is safer than a rename.
