M4V to BMP Transformation FAQ

How do I extract frames from an M4V video as BMP images?
+
Upload the M4V and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one BMP from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a BMP image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode.
Same resolution as the M4V video — a 1080p source produces 1920×1080 BMP frames; a 4K source produces 3840×2160 BMP frames. Resize after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 BMP images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the M4V as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR M4V can look flat or washed out as a BMP. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a BMP. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Yes. Uploaded M4V files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted BMP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur from the source M4V (the camera was moving when the frame was captured). Try picking timestamps from static scenes, or extract several adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize sharpness.
No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.
Yes, subject to whatever licence governs the source M4V content. The format change adds no claim — we add no watermark and claim no licence on the BMP output.

M4V

M4V is an Apple variant of MP4 that may carry FairPlay DRM, which is what stops some players from opening it.

BMP

BMP files store images in uncompressed bitmap format, resulting in large file sizes but perfect fidelity.
